the universal "baby girl" symbol

Let's just put it out there- Piper Jane is bald! Yep, ba-ald. And regardless of whether she is dressed in a ruffles, a dress or head-to-toe pink, people still ask, "How old is HE?"

That is, unless she is wearing a headband. I guess they are the universal symbol indicating "girl." Which makes them a hot commodity around here since Little Miss Bald requires one every. single. day.

Can you guess what I did during our loooooooooooooong drive to Texas last week? Yep, a full twelve hours of headband crafting. Ok, actually, I didn't spend the whole twelve hours drive working on headbands.. I talked to Adam a lot... and made some To Do lists as well... and even took pictures for the sewn ruffle how-to. But back to headbands. I made ruffles and more ruffles and then more ruffles. And then I assembled said ruffles into fluffy little headband accoutrements (white, blue, green, and orange are all now part of Piper Jane's ruffled-headband repertoire).

And then I took a page out of Heidi's book at Sew.Craft.Create and made some of the Not Martha Dahlias. Well, sort of. I didn't have fabric-tac adhesive on hand, so I whipped up some sewn versions. Lovely, no?

Also, I seem to have a problem stopping the headband assembly line once I get started, so if you're pregnant with a girl, assume you'll be receiving one of these gems from me as a shower gift.

ps- If you're in the market for headbands, one of our new sponsors, Mama Jill Designs, has GORGEOUS ones (for babies and grown ups, too!). Go check out her shoppe!

  1. That is so insanely funny! See we had the opposite problem. NO matte how much blue or football stuff I had our eldest son wear everyone commented on how much hair "she" had and what long eyelashes "she" had and wasn't "she" so cute. Ummm crazy! And there is no mistaking Miss Piper Jane for a BOY! She is always dressed up so adorably girlie!!! Cute, cute, cute headbands though!

  3. Sometimes even with a little hair and dressed in pink frillyness...they still think my Little Tiny is a boy...and now that she knows how to take off her headbands on her own there's no way in stopping it. :)
    LOVE all the headbands...beautiful!

  6. It's more the universal Eater egg symbol to me;) I like piper better without it! People always confuse genders, no matter wahet you put them in:)

  7. I have the same problem!! Except my little girl has a mohawk! LOL. I love the green one! What kind of fabric did you use for that? What are the white ones made of? LOVE them!

  8. Awwww, Piper Jane doesn't look like a boy! I have the same problem with Matilda. She's 21 months now and STILL doesn't have much hair......she's kind of sporting the mullet look right now. But you're right, without the hair on top, it doesn't matter how much pink you put them in or how girly girl they are dressed, they always say "awww, HE's so cute!" or "how old is HE?". I don't think I could ever get Matilda to keep one of those on her head, but they are ADORABLE!! Here's to hoping our girly's get some hair :-)!!!

  9. I love those headbands. I think I need some for me.

I had the same problem with my first baby. Her Papa used to call her "Baldie-Locks." And she did not like headbands. We tired. And then we gave up and I'd just shrug when people would ask how old my son was. My son who is wearing a pink dress. Whatev.

Piper Jane is super cute girl with or without a headband.

  12. I think bald baby girls are the best! My little girl was bald till she was almost 2. Well she had some hair but it was so light you could barely see it. :) I made a "I'm not a boy tee" here http://beckywaldrop.blogspot.com/2010/11/few-things.html

I would love to send you a onesie or shirt for Piper Jane!

  13. My daughter has tons of dark hair...and even when she's wearing a dress people ask how old HE if their is nothing in her hair! Bald or not, if your baby doesn't have a bow, they must be a boy.

  14. Beautiful! What a lucky girl to have such a crafty mom like you. I have made the Dahlia but with hot glue instead and it worked great.

  16. Quick questions--what do you use for the actual headband portion? Are they just the regular stretchy headbands you can buy at the store alongside the brushes, barrettes, etc.? Do you make the embellishments detachable or do they stay with the headband?

I just found out we are expecting our first girl in late summer and I have been gobbling up all of your girly girl tutorials. The pieced jersey dress I made yesterday turned out adorable!

  19. Quick question- where did you get the elastic for the headbands? Did you buy those as-is or did you assemble those as well? I have a baby girl on the way and want to be prepared!! :)

  20. I love this post. I really do. I might even link to it even though my baby is a boy.

  21. haha, awww. I once had my older daughter, who was around one and had fluffy hair, a soft yellow trench-type jacket, jeans with flowers up and down the leg, and pink robeez get told by an old lady, "You should tell your mommy to buy you more pink so people can tell you're a GIRL!" after she'd commented on 'him' and I'd corrected her with a smile.
Or a grey top with flutter sleeves and flowers... 'boy'
or a blue top covered in ruffles... 'boy'
    green dress... boy.
People are just... they shouldn't guess. I like to make it a policy to say, "Awww, what a cutie!" if I'm not 100% certain. lol.

  22. We have the same problem with our bald baby girl! Unfortunately now she knows how to rip them off and doesn't with in 3 seconds of getting one on her head so she's pretty much headband-less these days. She's one year old tomorrow and still pretty bald but not enough hair for a clip. Can't wait till she's got enough hair for that!

    Very pretty headbands. :)

  23. I have the same question about the elastics! Thats the hardest part about making headbands myself... Finding good elastic.
